Call or email Amelia Dallas (623. 8481), Harold Bass (939. 2841) and Bobby Stanley (573. 9261) and let them know you oppose tax payer money being spent on a pamphlet promoting the May 6 sales tax increase. To date, the county has failed to provide an estimate on how much staff time and public money will be spent on producing and mailing this pamphlet at your expense.
Help us stop this waste of tax dollars!
Come to the meeting at 6:30 p.m. on March 31 at the Governmental Center in Wentworth. Speak to them in person and express your opposition to the sales tax hike.

Ten reasons to oppose the sales tax increase:
It’s bad for education to tie school funding to this new tax.
It’s bad for lower income people especially, because they pay a higher percentage of their income in sales tax.
It’s bad for economic development and jobs.
It’s bad for attracting retail stores to our area. Don’t give people another reason to shop outside our county!
It’s bad fiscal policy – government needs to reduce its spending instead. High taxes cripple our economy.
The current sales tax: Virginia 5%, NC 6.75%.
Don’t raise our tax even more.
Don’t think this will result in less property tax.
The commissioners already voted against lowering property taxes if the higher sales tax is enacted.
The estimated money from this tax is a tiny “drop in the bucket” to pay for proposed new projects.

I want to take this time to thank you gentlemen for having the courage to bring this issue out into the light. Our county commissioners and school board are counting on the apathy of county residents to allow this tax increase to take place. If the tax is so important then why is it necessary to print a pamphlet? I did not receive a pamphlet when I was assessed for the construction of the new county courthouse or any other increase for that matter. Let the proposed increase stand on its own merit, if it can.
All residents should be mindful the increase is more than a mere quarter of percent as some would have us believe. We are not talking about moving the tax base from zero to a quarter percent, but from six and three quarters to seven percent. So the twenty-five cent on the 100.00 dollars which Mr. Bass was touting is really seventy cent on 100.00 dollars.
This is about perception, and if people perceive they can save money by shopping outside of the county then in all likelihood they will!
